How to Store a Kayak
Bad storage shortens a kayak's life by years. The two real enemies: UV and uneven pressure on the hull. Here's how to store right.

The two real enemies
- UV radiation. Sun degrades polyethylene over years. A kayak stored outdoors in full sun loses 30–50% of its lifespan vs one stored under cover.
- Uneven pressure on the hull. Polyethylene plastic flexes under load. A kayak resting on two narrow points for months will deform permanently ("oil-canning").
The right way (rank-ordered)
- Indoors, on padded wall hooks supporting the hull at multiple points — best for hull longevity.
- Indoors, suspended from ceiling hoists — second best; keeps hull off the floor.
- Outdoors, under a roof or shaded cover, on padded supports — fine.
- Outdoors with UV-protectant cover — acceptable for short-term.
- Outdoors uncovered — only if no other option, and use 303 UV Protectant monthly.
Wrong ways (don't do these)
- On its side leaning against a wall. Hull deforms over weeks.
- Upside down on the hull alone. Hull dents at the contact points.
- On grass or dirt outdoors. Moisture, UV, and animals.
- In direct sun, summer. Hull becomes brittle within 3–5 seasons.
- Strapped tightly to a rack year-round. Permanent dents.
Winterizing
- Rinse hull and cockpit. Dry completely (mold prevention).
- Lubricate rudder/skeg cables if applicable (silicone spray).
- Remove drain plugs to prevent freeze damage.
- Store with hatches open — slight ventilation prevents off-gassing buildup.
- Cover with breathable UV-protectant cover if outdoors.
- Inflatables: deflate fully, dry, store in cool dry place.
Apartment storage
- Ceiling hoist over a hallway or unused corner.
- Vertical wall mount (kayak on its nose, padded base).
- Storage unit if no in-home option.
- Don't store on a balcony in direct sun — UV will kill it in 2–3 years.
Kayaking involves inherent risk. Always wear a properly fitted life jacket, check the weather, and know your skill level before launching.
Frequently asked questions
Can I store a kayak vertically?
Yes, on its nose with a padded base. Vertical storage minimizes hull deformation. Don't store on its tail (hull supports point loads poorly).
How long can a kayak last?
Rotomolded polyethylene: 15–25+ years with good storage. Thermoformed: 10–20. Inflatable: 5–10.
What is 303 Protectant?
A UV-protectant spray that slows polyethylene degradation. Apply monthly to kayaks stored outdoors.
Does indoor storage really matter?
Yes — significantly. UV alone is the biggest single factor in kayak longevity.
